The United States military says it will continue to probe a marine's alleged rape of a high school girl in Japan's Okinawa Prefecture earlier this month, despite the release of the suspect after the victim withdrew the accusation against him.

"The US military, despite the charges being dropped in this case, will continue its own investigation," State Department spokesman Tom Casey said at a news briefing.

Mr Casey says the probe will be "to see what may or may not be done in terms of future legal action against this individual" because he, as a US service member, has an obligation to follow US law as well as Japanese law.

While repeating the US Government's regret on the case, Mr Casey said Washington would take all possible measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.

"We certainly want to make sure that we are good guests in Japanese homes," he said.

On Friday Japanese prosecutors released Tyrone Hadnott, 38, who had been detained for questioning since Okinawa police arrested him on February 11 for allegedly raping the girl in a car parked on a street in the town of Chatan.

Hadnott denied raping the girl but admitted to forcing her to kiss him, according to the police.

Hadnott was released because prosecutors decided not to press charges after the girl withdrew the accusation against him. He was transferred to the US military on Friday night.

容疑者は強かんは否定してるけど、少女に無理やりキスをさせたことは認めている、と。可哀そうに、怖い思いをしただろうに。
