North Korea yesterday threatened war if there were any attempts to search its ships for weapons of mass destruction, and renounced the 1953 truce that ended the Korean War, raising the prospect of a naval clash off the Korean peninsula's west coast.

The move by the South Korea-US combined forces command increased the surveillance to level 2 from the present level 3, Defence Ministry spokesman Won Tae-jae said. He said that was the highest level since 2006, when the North conducted its first-ever nuclear test.

The US has 28,500 troops in South Korea as a deterrent against North Korea.

北朝鮮は昨日、自国の船が大量破壊兵器の有無について捜索を受けることがあれば戦争になると脅し、朝鮮戦争終結時の1953年の休戦協定を破棄すると言った。これで、朝鮮半島西側水域での交戦の可能性が高まった。米韓の軍隊が警戒レベルを2から3にあがり、2006年の北朝鮮の核実験以来の最高の警戒レベルとなった。

US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton also said that North Korea faces consequences for its nuclear and missile tests and denouncing its "provocative and belligerent" threats. She also underscored the firmness of the US treaty commitment to defend South Korea and Japan, which are in easy range of North Korean missiles.
