｢反日｣とか｢親日｣とか＠シンガポール

仕事でシンガポールにいってきました。シンガポールは親日国家なのに比べ某国は云々とかときどきネットで見かけますねえ。ところがホテルの観光地図に載っていたシンガポールの歴史には驚くべき文言が！いや、ワタスは驚かなかったけどね。

Japanese occupation
After the British Army surrendered to the Japanese in 1942, Singapore was renamed Syonan-to. During the three-year Japanese Occupation, the Japanese army imposed harsh measures on Singaporeans. Japanese became the official language, food became scarce and prices of basic necessities increased dramatically. The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki led to the end of the World War II and the japanese Occupation. The end of the occupation signaled a new era to the British colonies of Singapore and Malaya where anti-colonial and nationalist sentiments started to take precedence among the local population.

日本による占領
1942年に英国軍が日本に降伏すると、シンガポールは昭南島と名前を変えられた。3年間の日本の占領時代、日本軍はシンガポール人を激しく抑圧した。日本語が公用語となり、食糧は欠乏し、日用品の値段は急騰した。広島と長崎への原爆投下が第二次世界大戦と日本による占領の終結につながった。占領の終結はシンガポールとマラヤの英植民地での新たな時代の幕開けとなり、住民の間では反帝国主義感情や愛国心が高まり始めた。

「アジアでヨーロッパの植民地だった国々は、日本のおかげで解放された」なんてことは単なる妄想だってことがよくわかる。たった3年の占領でも、いかにひどい目にあったのかってことがうかがい知れる記述ではありませんか。
ちなみに、日本占領時代に犠牲となった人々を哀悼するWar Memorial Parkてのもあります。
ところで、赤道に近いシンガポールより東京のほうがはるかに暑かったんですけど、なんで？
