トム・ハンクス氏の第2次大戦についての発言

Times誌のインタビューでの発言が、批判されてるそうだ。ハンクス氏は"The Pacific"という太平洋戦争に焦点を当てたドラマを制作したばかり。Tom Hanks' WWII Comments Spark Controversy - CBS News

And he is pleased that The Pacific has fulfilled an obligation to our World War II vets. He doesn't see the series as simply eye-opening history. He hopes it offers Americans a chance to ponder the sacrifices of our current soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. "From the outset, we wanted to make people wonder how our troops can re-enter society in the first place," Hanks says. "How could they just pick up their lives and get on with the rest of us? Back in World War II, we viewed the Japanese as 'yellow, slant-eyed dogs' that believed in different gods. They were out to kill us because our way of living was different. We, in turn, wanted to annihilate them because they were different. Does that sound familiar, by any chance, to what's going on today?"

この作品で第2次世界大戦を戦った元軍人たちとの約束を果たせたことが満足だと語った。このシリーズが歴史の新たな一面を示すだけのものではない。ハンクス氏はアメリカ人に、イラクやアフガニスタンでの軍の犠牲についても考えるきっかけとしてほしいと考えている。「当初から、我々は軍人がどのように社会へもどってくるのか考えるきっかけにしたかった。人生をやり直して、また皆と同じようにやっていけるのか?第2次大戦当時、我々は日本人を異なる神々を信仰する「肌の黄色い、目の細い野犬」とみなしていた。彼らは我々を生き方が異なるという理由で殺そうとしており、こちらも違う人間だからと彼らを抹殺しようとした。これは、今起こっていることとずいぶん似ていないだろうか?」

要するに、日本との戦争の背景には人種差別と恐怖心があったのではないか？それは今のイラクやアフガニスタンでの戦争にも引き継がれてはいないか?という問題提起。この発言は、ビル・オライリーやカール・ローヴに批判されてるそうだ。すなわち、祖国のために戦った勇敢な軍人たちを「差別主義者」呼ばわりとは!ってこと。

CBSニュースのコメ欄には、「日本が先に攻撃仕掛けたんだから、徹底的に戦って当然」とか「ナチより残虐だったのだから当然」みたいなのが多数ですが、いいコメがあったのでご紹介します。

Japan was built up as a bulwark against the then emergent communist regime in China. It was pragmatic self-interest - doesn't mean though that the American powers-that-be who managed this did not have attitudes against the Japanese. It was a good thing that America with her Allies defeated fascist Germany, Japan and Italy. America had the moral superiority over those regimes but it does not mean that America was free from racism. Or that Americans, from soldiers to the President of the land, did not act on those attitudes.
For example, yes America was attacked at Pearl Harbour and yes the nation was justifiably angry and thirsting for revenge. Yet the nation decided to intern several hundred thousand Japanese-AMERICANS without as much as a sigh. Yes, yes, I know - potential fifth column those sneaky Asiatics. Yet nothing remotely similar happened to Italian and German Americans and you can't tell me some members of those groups were not openly sympathetic to Mussolini and Hitler. Look, it's sounding like a duck and walking like a duck so it's a duck - well racism.

To extend that, yes the Japanese military man in WWII probably had thoughts about Americans (more so about Chinese and Koreans) that were unpleasant. But my point is that that doesn't mean that Americans soldiers were not free from racism, nor were they strong enough to refrain from acting upon their prejudices. The war in the Pacific was vicious, much more so than the Europeon theatre (and there was a lot of racism and hatred in that neck of the woods at that) and the American soldier participated in it. Not as much as the Japanese soldier but after a while, it became a difference of degree and not of kind. Ironically, shows you how soldiers of both sides of the conflict were kindred spirits, neh?

第2次大戦中の日本軍人がアメリカ人（中国人や朝鮮人はいうまでもなく）に反感を持っていたことは確かだろう。私が言いたいのは、だからといって米軍人が差別主義に侵されておらず、偏見をもって行動しなかったとは言えないだろうということだ。太平洋戦争はヨーロッパ戦線よりかなり激しいものであり、差別と憎悪が根底にあり、そこへ米軍が参加していたということだ。日本軍ほどではなかったにせよ、時間がたつにつれて程度の差こそあれ、本質的に同じようになっていた。皮肉にも、双方の兵士の性根は同じだったんだ。

それにしてもさ、過去の戦争の暗黒面を振り返ろうとしただけで、「祖国のために戦った兵士を馬鹿にした!」って怒る人って、どこにでもいるのだな。ほんと、太平洋のあっちとこっちなのに「性根は同じ」だよ。
